On
February 22-24, "Team Fort Worth" traveled to Houston to compete
in the indoor team championship event sponsored by the USPTA.
This event is played using a unique format where 8 courts, 2
from each level, play 16 games each and teams get one point for
each game they win. The team score is accumulated from the winning
games of all 8 courts for a maximum of 128 per match. Team Fort
Worth was comprised of players from the teams winning the fall
league
at the 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 levels representing Ridglea, RTC
Love-15, UTA Hammers and RTC, respectively. Interestingly, the
4.5 team from RTC was dessimated by the new enforcement of an old,
and unknown, rule that USPTA members are not allowed to compete
in this event. Four of the league winning 4.5 team are USPTA members
and thus ineligible. To complicate matters, two additional players
from that team planning to travel to Houston were unable
due to work or injury. Therefore, the 4.5 court vacancies were
filled by the league coordinator and 4.0 players playing up.
Fort Worth went undefeated in flight play. Day One found Fort Worth
playing at Chancellor's Racquet Club where they defeated teams
from Central Texas (85-43),
Southeast
Texas (75-53) and Lubbock (81-47). While the 4.0 and 4.5 teams
held there own, the courts were dominated by the 3.0 and 3.5 players.
At the end of day one, Fort Worth had accumulated 241 points and
was in the lead over second place Houston (230) by 11 points.
Day
Two found Fort Worth playing the second place team from Houston
in the first match of the morning at a different facility, Westheimer
Indoors. Again, the 4.0 and 4.5 courts held their own and managed
to pick up two games on Houston. Following in the pattern
of the previous day, the 3.0 and 3.5 courts picked up 12 additional
points on their Houston opponents to defeat Houston 71-57 and putting
the team in first by 25 total points (312-287).
Fort Worth moved back to Chancellor's Racquet Club but had
to wait until 5:45 to play their next and last match of flight
play - the last match of the day. In this match the team defeated
the opponents from Abilene in the closest match so far 68-60. With
a total of 380 points, Team Fort Worth had qualified to play on
Sunday in the finals against College Station who won their flight
with 355 points.
The stress factor increased on Sunday due to some miscommunication.
Fort Worth found themselves in a 0-10 deficit as one 4.5 court
had to be defaulted to College Station. The second 4.5 court tied
their opponents 8-8 as did the both of the 3.5 courts. With 4 courts
reporting, Fort Worth was still down by 10. The 4.0 courts split,
winning one 10-6 and losing the other 11-5, placing Fort Worth
down by 12 (39-51). Then the dominance of the 3.0 players shined.
The
first 3.0 team to come off the court, Rex Benson and Ted Samples,
blessed Fort Worth with 12 additional points leaving the score
differential at 4 (51-55). Unknown to the remaining 3.0 team of
Danny Terrell and Steve Bolton, the hopes of Fort Worth were riding
on their shoulders as the played on a remote court with no knowledge
of the outcome of the other team members. Terrell and Bolton, representing
Fort Worth and the Ridglea Gladiators, proved that they truly were
gladiators on this day by winning their court 13-3 and putting
the team score 6 points over College Station (64-58). While the
4.0 and 4.5 teams held their own through much of the tournament,
the team was truly riding on the shoulders of the dominant 3.5
and especially the undefeated 3.0 players.
